Traveller Planet Inferneron
Inferneron E876633-3
GreenAuger Biomining Incorporated had an ingenious and apparently sui generis idea for economically and safely extracting the heavy metals in the shield-environment of planet 'Greentree Sustainable Mining Forest One by GreenAuger Biomining Incorporated' (now called Inferneron) - bioengineered 'Auger-Trees' would be deposited via airships all across its megacontinents. These trees' verdant and unyielding roots would puverise the rock over short years, drawing up the metals into their wood. Then, ever few decades, conflagaratory firestorms would wash across the continent wafting metal-laden smoke into the stratosphere so magnetic-scoop equipped ships in low orbit could simply suck it up. Only a minimal presence would be needed on the surface of the planet, the trees would perpetuate themselves, even the fires would be stochastic - it's almost pure profit baby!
A licencing issue with the magscoops massively delayed their commercial implementation: In the meantime, to avoid wasting years of accumulated metals, aggresive wildfire prevention measures were implemented megacontinent wide. Thousands of firefighters were shipped in from offworld - I imagine you can see where this is going. GreenAuger's execs desert it, its captains skip, the company goes under, and suddenly the ground teams are marooned onworld.
Centuries pass.
A feudal society has reently been opened to the wider Empire. Its nobility are marked by their metal lungs, prosthesis handed down from generation to generation that given them an incredible lifespan of sixty or even seventy standard years beneath the saffron coloured skies. Beneath them, castes and guilds fulfil their needs (amongst them the Papadopouli, sawbones charged with transplanting the hereditary lungs). At the bottom, firebreakers keep civilisation (which clings to penninsula jutting into the world-ocean) from being incinerated, and outside of society Ashrunners hunt for pre-colonial artefacts dug up by auger-trees and exposed by recent burns.
Patrons With Imperial contact came Imperial commercial interests: Krongu Corporation found the lax standards of the world amenable and the population's dependence on fish an opportunity: The fish would eat Krongu and the kings who owned the fishfarms would see their populations (and thus military capacity) skyrocket to the moon! Unfortunately, the slime acquired a vile yellow-grey colouration from the tainted atmosphere, sickens the fish, and vast mats of it have escaped into the ocean and clog up the coastlines. Krongu Planetary Manager Marie Kelly escaped the fates of her colleagues who tarried too long in the courts of outraged kings (beheadings mostly) and shelters in the starport. She's been watching her employer's financial situation spiral and knows its only a matter of time: She wants to convince the last Krongu ship captain to skip with her before the thing is repossessed, but Captain Philip Robinson covets the platinum hoards of the local kings and will sit tight until bribed suitably.
King Rick IX's realm surrounds the starport and is one of the richest on the planet. His capital is only fifty kilometres away. Kelly wants you to heist his treasury, offering a secret route out of and into the starport and access to an icebreaker-like vessel (12 crew, shotguns) capable of battering through the slime rafts of the coast to reach his coastal capital. She does not give AF at this point and will freely give you corporate diplomatic credentials signed with her own name.
